Unit 22 is a typical example of the routine and local architectural interventions. A form of urban surgery – the replacement of a former unit by a contemporary building aligned to current legislation, building heights and other planning issues. The redevelopment of this unit is a contemporary response of sensitive grafting in a harmonious and respectful relationship with its surroundings, contributing to the overall quality of the street. The impact of the building not only aims to improve the user experience of the building but also aims to improve the general quality of the streetscape.
This building demonstrates the contribution and validity of the individual “unit” to the general beauty of the “whole” – the streetscape. Emphasis is made on the importance of contextuality and humbleness in architecture – resisting common temptations to emerge and stand out – represented by this small yet meaningful example.
Vernacular techniques were adopted in the design of this facade. Grass root solutions such as facade thickness were incorporated to create internal shadowing, proportions, solid-to-void ratios and rhythm to form the basis of this design.
Unit 22 received a special commendation in the Small Projects category at the 2022 MASP Awards.
